The ever-industrious Insomniac Games has joined a handful of other first-party PS Studios in releasing its PS5 Pro patches ahead of the console’s launch next month. Both the excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart have new updates available, incorporating support for Sony’s supercharged new system, including some unexpected ray tracing toggles.
Both games add two new PS5 Pro graphics modes, with the patch notes practically identical for each. Here’s what to expect:
- Performance Pro
- This mode targets a smooth 60 frames-per-second while retaining the image quality of the standard Fidelity mode through use of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). All ray tracing (RT) features are on, including ray traced reflections, ray tracing on water, and ray traced window interiors. This mode is recommended for most players.
- Fidelity Pro
- This mode targets 30 frames-per-second for players who want to experiment with new ray tracing graphical features. These new features can be tuned individually to reach higher intermediate frame rates, especially when using the VRR or 120 Hz Display Mode options. Pedestrian and traffic density may be increased in some areas, and fine hair detail is increased.
As mentioned in the Fidelity Pro description, there are some additional toggles you can toy around with in both games. These settings give you extra flexibility over the quality of the ray tracing, like whether you want reflections to be rendered in full resolution or not. Obviously, these come at a performance cost, but could be smoothed out by VRR if that’s something you fancy faffing around with. They could also breathe new life into the titles should the PS6 support backwards compatibility.
Will you be testing either of these titles out on your spangly new PS5 Pro, or have you had your fill of both games? Let us know in the comments section below.

$ony ripping off players. Can’t see any difference. Not worth £700. A PC does it better.
Think I’ve covered most complaints there so everyone can save themselves some time.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I’m assuming you won’t be changing your username to @PsProBoxSwitchOwner anytime soon then 😏
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
I guess mainly it’s just quality mode running at 60fps in most cases.
So we “no longer have to choose between performance and fidelity”. But now i see a choice i cant decide on, weeks before i get my Pro. Modern games take too much thought on settings rather than just slapping in the cartridge and playing.
@Yaycandy
I always go 60fps no matter what.
So much better when panning sound less blurry and so smooth.
Hmm, if I wanted to muck around with settings to get the best image quality vs performance ratio, I'd get a PC.
The SM2 patch is bigger than i expected at 4.727 gb. I cant imagine the Pro settings are anywhere near that big - curious to know if they have added anything else or improved some textures?
@OldGamer999 Yes, smooth gameplay over graphics anyday. Some games i switch over when doing photo modes and when bored. But playing im always at the best fps. Like gt7 with vrr its around 120fps
@colonelkilgore
I think @PsBoxSwitchOwner 's sarcasm was aimed at the usual tiresome complaints every Pro article here becomes littered with, rather than at the Pro itself.
Despite getting Spider-Man 2 around launch, I barely played it, so the new Pro modes seem like the perfect time to swing back into action and I'll give Ratchet another go, I've already got it's platinum but it was a fun game
@Rich33 yeah I just wanted to save themselves the effort.
@colonelkilgore that may depend on how MHwilds releases on ps5 v Pro.
That will be my deal breaker I think.
Until then I’m tighter than a ducks a*se. So unless Santa is real and puts one in my stocking I will be holding off!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
Will that be a quality mode stocking and Santa at 60fps, ho ho ho.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
Lol - im not sure it will work, but its a nice thought (and you did forget "might as well wait for PS6").
@PsBoxSwitchOwner GTAVI will be the decider for me… as I’m sure it will for a lot of gamers.
Still haven’t played my copy, excited to be able to get 60fps with amazing visuals AND ray tracing. Haters can hate, but the Pro is there for folks who want that extra nudge of power to really help the games shine and get the best play experience.
@colonelkilgore
Depending on when this one comes out, we might not be that far off from the inevitable PS6 port of the game.
Call me crazy but the fidelity pro mode sounds like pc settings 😅
Oh yes, trace me some rays! That's why the console really exists 😁
@Drago201 that's kind of what a pro console should be, right? Hopefully this pushes Xbox/MS to make a console like PC, and that will push Sony to do something crazy with PS6 pro 😅
@PsBoxSwitchOwner then don’t buy it. I’ll enjoy mine thanks.
@AgentGuapo I guess sarcasm isn’t your strong point?
Enjoy it. I’m sure you will have a lot of fun with it!
@stu123 i still say the ps6 isn't coming out till later on 2028/2029.
@AgentGuapo read the 2nd half the comment , i almost fell for it myself.
So much for Fidelity mode with 60fps... now everyone's just going to have to decide between Fidelity Pro and Performance Pro... what a joke. I thought the entire point of the PS5 Pro was getting rid of the need to have to pick between two modes and just have one great mode with the best of both worlds...... wow.
I know I'm the minority but I'm really happy with Fidelity Pro.
I don't mind 60fps or higher (I actually would prefer to stick with 30 fps) and better graphics is way more valuable for me <3
Well, the more we hear about the PS5 Pro, the more clear it becomes... the PS5 Pro... is...... FOR KINGS!!!!!!!!!
@JokerBoy322 They were never getting rid if the modes as its just too unrealistic. Fact is though the new performance mode gives you the fidelity mode features of the base PS5 at 60fps, the new fidelity mode is for those who want better RT.
PS5 PRO Performance
PS5 PRO Fidelity
So when the PS6 comes out it will just be called
Performance and Fidelity again until the PS6 PRO 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
@ear_wig Exactly. My backlog is full of Pro enhanced games. And I cannot wait to play these on my New baby next month. F1 24, The Crew Motorfest, God of War, Spiderman 2, The first Descendant, Dragon Age etc. HUUUUGEEEE
I thought the pro’s only advantage was that there will be no more choice between quality and performance… and yet they remain. But now their naming changed to “pro” ? This is getting comical and out of hand. Just wait for the PS6 and all will be settled until then IMHO.
@JokerBoy322 reading what it says above, the better your tv is , the higher the frame rate you can get from that mode, that 30 fps is the baseline. the old performance and fidelity modes will be combined into the new pro performance and the pro fidelity mode mode will increase the ray tracing enhancements.
30 and 60 fps is so 2020! VRR is the way to go!
@DennisReynolds omg... that just proves my point. You guys are just celebrating going from Performance vs Fidelity modes to Performance Pro vs Fidelity Pro modes. It's laughable.
This feels like emperors new clothes.
When I want max settings 4k 60fps I will use my PC, I have a PS5 for new Sony games, of which there are none unfortunately.
@JokerBoy322 So you would rather no new better RT? Performance Pro gives you everything Fidelity mode on base PS5 offers but at 60fps so you got what you wanted both modes combined. Fidelity Pro is just for those who really want to push the visuals to the absolute limits.
I swear console gamers really don't understand how taxing and expensive RT is.
@Fishnpeas Yeah Astro Bot, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, FF7 Rebirth and Rise of Ronin never happened this year.
@DennisReynolds wow, what an absolute wealth of games to come out.
We are currently in year 4 of PS5.
This year they released 8 titles, 2 were remakes/remasters and one was cancelled. So 5 titles.
In yes 4 of PS1 Sony release 58 titles.
In year 4 of PS2 Sony released 48 titles.
In year 4 of PS3 Sony released 45 titles.
In year 4 of PS4 Sony released 27 titles.
When games are so big they can't manage more than a handful of games a year, perhaps it's time to look at what gamers actually want instead of being able to see a couple of extra people in the crowd on a Ratchet game?
@Fishnpeas none of those consoles released during a pandemic when everything was shut down for almost 2 years.
@Fishnpeas Sony released 27 games in Year 4 of the PS4? Yeah i want a list of these games as i feel context is missing.
Yeah shocker games take longer to make nowadays. Look at Assassin's Creed we have only had 2 games this gen so far and both are on last gen consoles. Games cost too much money now and require a lot of time to make so pumping out endless titles is just impossible. I listed 5 AAA games that are either console exclusive or straight up exclusive and that's more then both Nintendo and MS have released. There's also Lego Horizon to come as well. You're expecting too much from Sony and well everyone else.
@DennisReynolds You missed the last point.
If titles are blowing up to the point of them only being able to release a handful a year, they should reevaluate what is important to gamers.
Games used to be tight experiences with 6-20 hour storys, now we have the same six hours of story content but with 40-50 hours of completely unnecessary bloat to hide the ridiculously thin plots that simply travel a straight line.
If you enjoy spending countless hours collecting pointless nonsense from vast environments that look pretty but are simply cardboard fascias with zero depth have at it, but I'm very tired of being peed on and being told it's lemonade.
It just isn't.
@DennisReynolds Just to add, people are touting Astro Bot to be the best thing to come out this year, do you know this is pretty much a rehash of the Astro Bot I played in 2018 on psvr?
It's a 6 year old reskin....
@twitchtvpat You realise that in order to release a console in 2020 they would have had to be developing games years before that right?
The pandemic wouldn't have stopped anything coming out by now...
@Fishnpeas would have delayed a lot of stuff , you miss the point you can't really compare generations due to factors like that.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner but a £700 PC doesn't do it better. They aren't exactly making money on the console so how are they ripping people off? People fail to see how much the components in this thing cost, sure they could have made it cheaper but then it woud have hardly been an upgrade. It's an optional upgrade you don't need to buy it so you aren't ripped off.
@JokerBoy322 but it does. It's literally original PS5 fidelity mode at 60 fps. Its exactly the best of both worlds. They've done added work to include an extra mode as a bonus, they didn't have to. I don't see how people complain at that.
@Fishnpeas i mean it's astrobot they're going to be similar. Spiderman 2 is like spiderman 1. GOW ragnarok is like GOW. Sequels are generally always similar. Don't change what's broken, Astro Bot is outstanding.
@Fishnpeas and no games? I mean I've played probably 25 that are console exclusives. I've played 3 in the last month or so alone. It isn't amazing but people forget how barren PS4 was for first party exclusives. It was year 5 it all started picking up
@Andy22385 mate it was sarcasm. It’s just the complaining we see on every article of the pro
@Andy22385 because the whole point of the Pro model was to get rid of the need to pick between 2 modes....
@JokerBoy322 but like I say it's a bonus. It doesn't affect anything it existing or not existing if you want the 60 fps. I don't see how it's an issue them doing extra work on a new mode. The pro is just meant to give us better options and full PS5 visuals at 60 not less options . Having only one mode on the Pro and 2 on the regular PS5 does the opposite
